As we wade ever further into 2015, we encounter more and more exciting album releases, many of which have been announced at short notice. Two tracks have been released over the last couple of days, and despite the vast differences between these two artists I wanted to compile them into one post as both are the lead singles for albums to come later in the year.
The first track comes from Manchester’s Everything Everything, who are due to release their third album Get To Heaven on the 15th June 2015 (which can be pre-ordered here). This will be the follow up to 2013’s hugely successful ARC, which gained them extensive mainstream acknowledgement. The new single is called ‘Distant Past’, and takes the quirkiness and frantic energy of their first album Man Alive, blending it with the solid songwriting talent which became so apparent on their second album. It’s pleasing to see how the band continue to develop their sound and perhaps most importantly continue to remain relevant with music that’s genuinely interesting with socially conscious lyrics. Despite the really quite bizarre video (no change there for the band), one thing is for sure, which is that this new track will be absolutely huge when played live, particularly with its uplifting chorus. Enjoy!
On a completely different sonic level is the newest release from Canada’s finest musical innovators Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who are releasing their new album Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress on the 31st March 2015 on Constellation Records – the new album can be pre-ordered here. This will be the band’s fifth album under the ‘Godspeed’ moniker and the follow-up to 2012’s astonishing Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!. This seven-minute track – ‘Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!’ – is simply an excerpt of the full piece, which looks set to be astoundingly powerful. The new song kicks things off with a real aggression which grows throughout the piece, with continually-building layers which grow to a huge crescendo. Great stuff. Listen here:
